A Florida man is in jail and healing after trying to flee a Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy and his K-9 officer.

According to Fox 35 Orlando, James Rutledge Jr. is suspected of a “smash-and-grab” incident at a daycare parking lot.

Police say Rutledge stole a purse from a woman’s car and used her bank cards at a nearby Walmart.

Ocala police located Rutledge and tried to perform a traffic stop to arrest him, but he fled.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office came in to assist after Rutledge crashed he car and began to run on foot.

Cpl. Colton Sullivan and his K-9 Adelmo attempted to stop Rutledge, with Adelmo eventually catching and taking the burglary suspect down.

The dog and man eventually got into a fight. At one point, Rutledge attempted to choke the K-9, but Cpl. Sullivan deployed a taser to loosen Rutledge’s grip.

Once freed, K-9 Adelmo had the final word as the dog took a bite into Rutledge as deputies put handcuffs on him.

“You shouldn’t have fought him like that,” a deputy says.

Rutledge was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office says that K-9 Adelmo is doing fine after the attack.
