A Rhode Island city council member has resigned after he was exposed for an illegal drug habit while passed out in his car.
According to WJAR, Cranston, Rhode Island, council member Matthew Reilly was asleep in his car when police opened the door and woke him.
The started GOP council member awoke, tried to hide the crack pipe in his hand, and denied he had any drugs on him or in his vehicle.
Police say they were called over by others to wake Reilly who appeared to be choking while he was passed out.
Police eventually found crack laced with fentanyl inside the council member’s car.
In his resignation letter, Reilly contributed his relapse due to a recent divorce.
He was charged with drug possession.
Reilly has also resigned his seat as chairman of the local GOP and a special election will be held to find his replacement.
