A hostage situation at a Mississippi Wal-Mart unfolded on Wednesday, resulting in the death of the hostage-taker.

21-year-old Corlunda McGinister, of West Helena, Arkansas, was killed during a tense standoff at a Richlands Wal-Mart.

Reportedly, McGinister got into a confrontation with an employee in the customer service department, which resulted in McGinister holding her hostage.

When Richlands Police and Rankin County Sheriff’s Office deputies made contact and tried to diffuse the situation, attempts to diplomatically end the standoff failed and lawmen were forced to open fire.

“It’s devastating for all parties involved. The officers, everybody that was involved in this situation. With the Christmas season coming around, mental health is a big deal because of the stress involved,” said Richland Police Chief Nick McLendon.

Video of the incident was captured by a shopper and released to social media.

According to WLBT, no one else was hurt in the standoff.
