A woman in Kentucky has been arrested after her child reportedly died from injuries sustained while being sexually abused.
Erica Lawson, a resident of Mount Vernon, was taken in on Sunday after her child was admitted to a local hospital and showed signs of mistreatment.
The child had reportedly been raped and beaten and required life support, but was brain-dead by the time she died.
The Middlesboro Police Department handled the arrest and are currently conducting the investigation alongside the Bell County Sheriff’s Office.
MPD charged Lawson for second-degree manslaughter and first-degree criminal abuse against a child under 12.
According to the New York Post, Lawson is currently detained at the Bell County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
The nature of the abuse and fatal injuries sustained by the child have not been publicly revealed, and the investigation is ongoing.
Located in the southeastern part of the Bluegrass State along the Cumberland Gap, Bell County is home to just over 24,000 residents.
