West Virginia State Police offices across the state are mourning after one of their own was shot and killed Friday night.
According to the NY Post, Sgt. Cory Maynard and other troopers responded to Beech Creek for the report of a shooting. Troopers were immediately shot at when they arrived at the scene.
Sgt. Maynard was hit during that initial volley of shots and was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The suspect, Timothy Kennedy, was able to elude troopers and escape. A manhunt was then launched to locate him. He was then apprehended and is in police custody.
Mingo County has a century-long history of violence, including the famed feud between the Hatfields and McCoys.
