An investigation is underway in Delaware after an off-duty trooper fatally shot her boyfriend during a domestic incident that left her hospitalized.

Authorities tell ABC 6 News the shooting happened inside a home and that the unidentified trooper called police to say shots had been fired.

When police arrived on scene they found the trooper badly beaten and her boyfriend, 43-year-old Maurice Ifill of Owings Mills, Md., with a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

ABC 6 reports Ifill was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The trooper is reportedly resting with serious injuries and is in stable condition, state police say.

Ifill’s body has been turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences where an autopsy will be performed, according to CBS News.

State police tell CBS News the trooper and her boyfriend got into a fight that quickly turned physical.

“She was being severely beaten by the boyfriend which led to the trooper, who was off-duty, grabbing her service weapon and firing one shot at the boyfriend,” Delaware State Police Cpl. Gary Fournier tells CBS.

Neighbors describe how investigators were searching for clues in the case.

“There was police lined up all outside the neighborhood, and they were banging on our door asking if we heard anything suspicious, and I saw a woman being carried out on a stretcher,” said neighbor Casi Dublois.

“She’s very nice, she always said hello,” neighbor Mackenzie Garrison tells CBS.

Neighbors say the trooper, who they know as Jackie, has two teenage daughters and say they were not home at the time of the shooting.

“It’s horrible. I know she has two kids, too, so I hope everything is okay,” Garrison told CBS.

According to CBS, state police say it’s too early in the investigation to determine what, if any, charges will be filed.
