Virginia Trooper shot and killed during drug raid

UPDATE: Virginia State Police have identified the suspect killed in the raid as 44-year-old Corey Johnson.

Earlier:
Virginia State Police are mourning the loss of one of their own. Trooper Lucas Dowell was shot and killed during a drug raid in Cumberland County Monday night.

According to Virginia State Police, Dowell was part of a tactical team executing a search warrant.

One male suspect inside the home began shooting at the troopers when they entered the home, that’s when the tactical team returned fire.

Trooper Dowell was the only officer shot. He later died at the hospital from his injuries.

The male suspect was also shot and killed on-scene.

The Virginia State Police Superintendent, Colonel Gary Settle, said, “this is an extremely difficult day for the State police. We are humbled by Lucas’ selfless sacrifice and grateful for his dedicated service to the Commonwealth. He will forever be remembered by his State Police Family for his great strength of character, tenacity, valor, loyalty, and sense of humor.”
