A Virginia officer was shot and killed while performing a traffic stop late Friday evening, and now officers are searching for the suspect.

According to WTOP, officer Dominic Winum was just about to get out of his car when the man in the vehicle turned his gun at the officer and began firing.

Police say the suspected shooter has been identified as Dakota Richards.

Virginia State Police report that after shooting Winum, Richards then ran away from the scene and hid in a nearby barn. Officers found the suspected shooter and demanded he surrender. Richards apparently made a “threatening move” and was shot and killed by officers.

Winum had been a state trooper prior to joining the local police department.
