A San Diego mother, who battled mental illness for a decade, was shot and killed Monday after she allegedly tried to ram officers with her car.
Police say 39-year-old Michelle Shirley was driving erratically through a residential neighborhood just as school was letting out. Numerous calls were coming in to dispatchers about a possible drunk driver near the intersection of Arlington and Post Avenues.
Cell phone video shot by witnesses showed Shirley’s car “meandering erratically down a leafy road in the middle of the afternoon, with its hazard lights blinking,” The Daily Mail reported.
Officers eventually employed a ‘PIT’ maneuver after they noticed Shirley driving on the wrong side of the road.
According to NBC7, Shirley then tried to get away and hit a police car when she put her vehicle in reverse, then struck a second Torrance PD patrol car.
At least 20 shots were fired during the incident and one of the officers suffered moderate injuries.
