Large packages of marijuana were filmed being flung from a truck during a police chase that reached speeds of up to 100mph.
However, by the time officers went to retrieve the evidence from the highway in Arizona, passing drivers had apparently already made off with the drugs.
The chase was caught on the dashboard camera of a police car pursuing the white vehicle near Casa Grande, a city in Pinal County.
It began when a deputy who was monitoring traffic spotted the truck travelling at high speed.
“When the deputy caught up with the vehicle, he attempted to perform a traffic stop,” Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
“The vehicle began to accelerate to speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour and the occupants began to throw bales of marijuana out of the vehicle onto the roadway.”
When police finally caught up with the vehicle, the two occupants started running but were captured, the statement said.
The two have been identified as 43-year-old Mario Perez-Paz and 21-year-old Juan Aguilar-Zavala.
Police said they were not unable to retrieve the drugs “due to traffic conditions”, as motorists who were not involved in the chase or in the transport of drugs stopped to pick up the bales.
