Utah’s Weber County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the graduation of its first ever electronic detection K-9.

According to FOX 13, the 16-month-old black Labrador named URL has been certified as the state’s first electronic detection K-9, having been trained by the same trainer who produced the dog that played a role in the arrest of former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle.

URL is trained to sniff out electronic storage devices such as thumb drives, SIM cards, tablets, hard drives, and other devices.

“Whether it’s child porn, or terrorism intelligence, narcotics or financial crimes information, URL has the ability to find evidence hidden on basically any electronic memory device,” a press release from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office states.

Authorities say URL will assist investigators on cases requiring his keen nose for electronics, as well as detecting contraband in the jail- such as mobile phones.

“URL does not actually search for illegal materials, but rather his highly sensitive nose has been trained to detect the unique chemical compounds found in the certain electronic components,” the release states.

URL was rescued from a shelter as a puppy and trained by Jordan Detection K-9 in Greenfield, Indiana. He underwent six months of training before becoming one of nine electronic detection K-9s in the entire country (and the only one in the western US).

According to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, URL was purchased using funding from the Weber Metro Narcotics Strike Force and that the Sheriff’s Office will be responsible for both his care and deployment.
