Update:  After severe backlash once the world learned what was going on in Spartansburg, PA, the recently re-elected fire chief and convicted child rapist Roger Gilbert Jr has resigned.

Stating death threats to his family and reminding angry citizens of his 18-year clean record, the man who committed one of the most horrific crimes imaginable is departing his post.

It’s one of those headlines your brain has trouble reconciling. “Re-elected” and “child rapist” should never be in the same sentence about the same person.

However in the small town of Saprtansburg, Pennsylvania, that’s just what happened – a convicted child rapist just got re-elected as the small municipality’s volunteer fire chief.

Chief Roger Gilbert Jr was convicted of ‘involuntary deviate sexual intercourse’ with a 4-year-old girl, which undoubtedly did lifelong harm to the innocent child. Gilbert was convicted in 2001 and served a 5 to 10 year sentence.

Also shocking is that the pedophile Gilbert has support from the mayor, Mayor Ann Louise Wagner, and that he was reportedly voted to be chief by other members of the volunteer fire department.

“I support the fire department and their decision to have him as chief,” Wagner told The Corry Journal. “The firemen have always elected their own officers and that’s how it’s always been done. We don’t question their decisions.”

The child’s mother doesn’t think Gilbert should be in a position where he may interact with children.
