The San Juan County Sheriff Department is reporting that the shooter involved in the attack at Aztec High School is down, with at least two wounded. Deputies are currently in the process of clearing the school.
On Facebook, the SJCSO made it very clear that classes would not resume for the day.
“Parents of Aztec High School students please meet at Aztec Police Department to pick up your kids,” the post wrote.
Some locals are shocked that such a thing could take place in their hometown.
“Naively, I never thought this could happen in our community,” Denise Pruett said in reply to SJCSO’s post. “My thoughts are with the families, students and staff. Deeply sad.”
According to KRQE, other area schools have been placed on lockdown as well, including in nearby Bloomfield.
