Update: Suspect in shooting of Alabama DA is a former state trooper

Update: 7:00 p.m. – The suspected shooter in today’s ambush attack on western Alabama DA Greg Griggers is a former state trooper.  The former state trooper has been identified as Steve Smith, Jr.  He was shot and killed after the ambush attack.

“Griggers got shot in the face and they killed the ex-state trooper who shot him,” Jackson told AL.com.

The motive for the the shooting is not known at this time, however Smith, Jr. was questioned in a 1996 attack on the first black judge to preside over Sumter, Marengo and Greene counties, according to AL.com. Smith Jr. was reportedly fired at some point after the incident, but details aren’t clear at this time.

Update: 3:45 p.m. – Western Alabama District Attorney Greg Griggers was shot while sitting in his vehicle in front of his office.

The suspect was then shot and killed by a law enforcement officer.

Late last year, it was reported that Gritters was the head of a drug task force that had made large seizures from Mexican cartel members.

Earlier:
17the Judicial Circuit District Attorney Greg Griggers has bee shot in downtown Demopolis, a city in western Alabama.

The suspect is reportedly dead, although it’s not known who shot and killed him.

The extent of Griggers’ injures are not known at this time.
