A manhunt for the killer of a Pierce County deputy is underway in Washington State, with schools in some districts opening late as law enforcement comb the area for the men responsible for killing the deputy.
The deputy was killed late Sunday night after the PSCO was notified of a home invasion in the Fredrickson area. During the 911 call, dispatchers report hearing screaming and sounds of a struggle.
Arriving on the scene, the deputy -identified as 34-year-old Daniel A. McCartney- pursued two burglars for about three minutes before the McCartney was mortally wounded by gunfire, eventually succumbing to his wounds after being transported to the hospital.
McCartney, who had been on the force since 2014, leaves behind a wife and three boys.
One of the two suspects was found dead near the home not long after the shooting, with a handgun recovered at the scene.
As an Honor Guard keeps watch over McCartney’s lifeless body, other deputies have been hunting the second suspect, employing K-9s and other resources in the search.
According to The News Tribune, drivers have been asked to avoid the search area and residents were advised to stay in their homes.
After McCartney was declared dead, droves of law enforcement officers from numerous agencies stopped by the hospital to render respects and condolences.
