LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Latest on the fatal police shooting of a man in a Las Vegas hospital emergency room (all times local):
8:55 a.m.
Authorities say a man in police custody inside a Las Vegas hospital was fatally shot by an officer while the man was pointing a stun gun at a nurse.
Police Capt. Kelly McMahill said Monday the unidentified man was taken to the hospital and put in a room in the hospital’s emergency room because he was too incoherent to be admitted into jail after being arrested on a felony arrest warrant.
McMahill says a corrections officer left a bag with the stun gun in it in the room alone with the man.
She says the man pointed the stun gun at a hospital security officer and a nurse when they entered the room.
The security officer fled and got a police officer.
McMahill says the suspect was aiming the stun gun at the nurse when the officer entered and opened fire, killing the man.
The killing happened about 4:15 a.m. The man was arrested about 11 p.m. Sunday after he was found unconscious near a bus stop.
7 a.m.
Las Vegas police say an officer was involved but uninjured in a shooting at a hospital that left another person dead.
The shooting at University Medical Center near downtown Las Vegas happened early Monday.
Police say no officers were hurt but one person is dead.
The entrance to the emergency room and the state’s only Level 1 trauma center was briefly restricted to hospital workers and those seeking care.
Hospital spokeswoman Danita Cohen said the facility as of 7 a.m. was open as usual.
