UPDATE: The FBI Special Agent who discharged a firearm at a Planet Fitness in Grand Rapids, MI and fired shots at a responding GRPD Sergeant has been charged with assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm at or near a building and possession of a firearm while under the influence.
The Detroit Free Press is reporting the suspect as FBI Special Agent Hernandez, who is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday. He is reportedly in Grand Rapids on business from Las Vegas.
It is still not publicly known what led to the incident, but the charge of possession of a firearm while under the influence appears to be a factor.
An FBI employee in Michigan is reported to have shot at a Grand Rapids Police officer on Monday night.
Grand Rapids Police informed the public via Twitter about the incident, saying that the man had threatened citizens and brandished a firearm and fired three shots in a local Planet Fitness at around 1:18 Monday morning.
According to WZZM13, GRPD identified the man as a 35-year-old FBI employee. When a sergeant tried to contact the man, the federal employee opened fire.
While the suspect was apprehended at gunpoint in the parking lot, officers did not return fire and no one was reportedly hurt during the incident.
The FBI office in Detroit has released the following statement:
“The FBI takes allegations of misconduct very seriously. We are aware of the matter involving the recent arrest of an FBI Special Agent and are fully cooperating with the Grand Rapids Police Department. This matter has been referred to the FBI’s Internal Investigations Section in Washington, DC, as well as the Department of Justice’s Office of Inspector General. Because this is an ongoing investigation, we will not comment further.”
The suspect is currently being questioned about what led up to the incident.
