A tense standoff with a male suspect in Arizona has resulted in five officers being shot, three more wounded, and one civilian being injured- and the situation continues to unfold.

The incident began at 54th Avenue and Elwood Street in Phoenix, after authorities received reports of gunfire.

Upon investigation, law enforcement encountered an armed man and one officer was shot multiple times.

Backup soon arrived and attempts to counter the barricaded gunman resulted in four additional officers being wounded.

At the time the other officers were wounded, a baby was placed outside the home by the gunman, as bait to lure the officers into his line of fire.

“As officers went to bring that baby to safety, the suspect continued to shoot — firing and striking four other officers,” Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said.

According to the New York Post, one officer is currently in a critical condition but is expected to recover.

A female civilian was also injured in the exchange.

The situation remains ongoing.
