Update: 2 police officers shot, killed in Ohio

Two police officers were shot and killed today responding to a 911 hangup call in Westerville, Ohio. Westerville is a suburb of Columbus.

As the officers entered the apartment, bot were immediately shot, Westerfield Police Chief Joe Morbitzer told reporters.

“Both officers gave their lives in the protection of others,” Morbitzer said through tears. “Those are true American heroes.”

The officers were identified as Anthony Morelli, 54, who had been on the force for 30 years, and Eric Joering, 39, who was a 17-year veteran.

The suspect was wounded and is hospitalized.
