A Rio de Janeiro man attempting to steal from UFC strawweight Polyana Viana was beaten to a bloody pulp by the Brazilian bombshell, who was unwilling to hand over her cell phone.
Viana was approached by the man while walking through the West Zone of the city on Saturday night when she was approached by the man, who instigated what many in the self-defense community refer to as a “shark bump,” when a criminal asks for something in order to catch the victim off guard.
“When he saw I saw him, he sat next to me,” Viana told MMA Junkie. “He asked me the time, I said it, and I saw he wasn’t going to leave. So I already moved to put my cell phone in my waist. And then he said, ‘Give me the phone. Don’t try to react, because I’m armed.’ Then he put his hand over (a gun), but I realized it was too soft.”
However, Viana wasn’t so sure she was about to get shot, and called the man on his bluff.
“He was really close to me,” she said. “So I thought, ‘If it’s a gun, he won’t have time to draw it.’ So I stood up. I threw two punches and a kick. He fell, then I caught him in a rear-naked choke. Then I sat him down in the same place we were before and said, ‘Now we’ll wait for the police.’”
The gun, as it turned out, was made of cardboard, and her robber had recently been released from a previous arrest.
Viana held the man in place until law enforcement arrived. He was treated for injuries before being taken to jail.
“He said, ‘Call the police, then’ because he was scared I was going to beat him up more,” she recounted.
The 27-year-old fighter is no stranger to robberies. Previously, motorcycle bandits had attempted to rob her, only to be sorted out with a vicious quickness.
