CHARLOTTESVILLE — Virginia State Police say two people died during a helicopter crash in Albemarle County near Charlottesville.

In a news conference, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe linked the deaths to the white nationalist rally that was happening nearby.

Around 5 p.m. Saturday, the helicopter crashed into a wooded area near a residence on Old Farm Road, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. In a statement Saturday night, Corrine Geller, Virginia State Police spokeswoman, said the pilot and a passenger were “assisting public safety resources” in Charlottesville.

Lt. H. Jay Cullen, 48, of Midlothian, and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates, of Quinton, died at the scene. No one on the ground was injured, police said.
