Two McAllen police officers were shot and killed while responding to a call Saturday afternoon, The Monitor reported.

Police Chief Victor Rodriguez identified the officers as Edelmiro Garza, 45, and Ismael Chavez, 39, at a news conference Saturday evening, the McAllen news outlet reported.

Rodriguez said at the news conference that the officers were responding to a call about an assault at around 3:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of Queta Street. The officers tried to enter the home when the suspect, 23-year-old Audon Ignacio Camarillo, shot at them, The Monitor reported.

“They were doing their job,” Rodriguez said, according to The Monitor. “That is what they were supposed to do. The person was a suspect of the incident, met our officers at the door, and shot at both officers. Both officers suffered fatal wounds, they have both passed away as a result … The officers never had a chance to suspect deadly assault on them, much less death.”

Camarillo shot and killed himself shortly after opening fire on the officers, the outlet reported.

Other information about what led to the assault call was not immediately clear, according to The Monitor.

According to The Monitor, Garza was with the department more than eight years while Chavez was with the department for more than two.

The Monitor also reported that public records show that Camarillo had several run-ins with the police going back to 2016, and was arrested last month on assault charge

Both Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton tweeted their condolences to the city and the police department, and said that they will provide the McAllen Police Department with any support it needs.
