Two Aurora police officers, part of a crime task force, were shot on Monday evening in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch area in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect who was also shot, police said.

The shooting happened in the 4700 block of Argonne Street, according to Denver police.

The two Aurora officers shot are SWAT members on assignment with the FBI Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force, said Denver Division Chief of Patrol Ron Thomas at a news briefing.

The task force, at about 5:30 p.m., was following multiple suspects in recent armed robberies of metro area convenience stores, Thomas said. The task force attempted to contact the suspects in the area of East 47th Avenue and Andes Street and a suspect took off running.

The fleeing suspect tried to “forcefully” take a vehicle during his flight and that’s when shots were “exchanged,” Thomas said.

Both of the officers have non-life-threatening injuries, Aurora police said.

The suspect is in critical condition at Denver Health Medical Center.
