Two police chiefs from two different states have been charged with attempting to acquire machine guns and other illegal weapons by improperly using their powers.
According to Maryland Matters, the police chief for Coates, North Carolina, and Ray, North Dakota, attempted to use a federal exception to have gun dealers bring in machine guns for “demonstrations” and then acquire them for their personal use.
Federal law allows licensed gun dealers to perform demonstrations to police for real-life examples and potential purchases.
The small towns of Coates and Ray do not have SWAT teams that validate the need for these demonstrations.
James Sawyer and Matthew Jeremy “M.J.” Hall were two of five people indicted with the charges, along with at least two other police officers.
Sawyer requested at least 70 weapons to be demonstrated, and Hall asked for 92.
The indictment was sealed until earlier this week.
