Trooper shot responding to rollover accident, suspect shot by good Samaritan

An armed citizen is reported to have shot a suspect who wounded an Arizona Public Safety Trooper earlier this morning in western Maricopa County.

Local news agencies report that the trooper was allegedly en-route to a rollover accident in the early hours of this morning when he was shot by a motorist who instigated an altercation with the lawman.

The suspect was reportedly shot by a citizen after the trooper went down.

DPS dispatchers were notified of the situation by way of the trooper’s radio, which was overheard on police scanners in the area.

“To the civilian on the DPS trooper’s radio, if you can hear me, I need you to let me know where the suspect is that got in an altercation with our trooper,” said over the airwaves.

“The suspect is uh, occasionally breathing or stirring. He’s been shot by a passer-by,” the man with the wounded trooper’s radio calmly responded. “He’s laying right next to the officer.”

The trooper was reportedly wounded in the shoulder and was medevaced from the scene of the shooting by helicopter with non life-threatening injuries along with a woman who was reportedly ejected from her vehicle at the accident site.

According to CBS5AZ, a stretch of Interstate 10 is expected to be closed until this afternoon.

No information has been released at this time concerning the suspect or the trooper’s armed rescuer.
