The transgender individual who set off a series of violent protests at a Koreatown spa in Los Angeles is a registered sex offender, records show.
Darren Merager, 52, was charged with five felony counts of indecent exposure, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Initially, Merager was the source of a complaint by a woman that claimed the 52-year-old exposed male genitalia in the women’s section of the spa, even in front of minors.
The video became viral, setting off a series of violent clashes outside of Wi Spa, with reports of Antifa involvement.
According to ABC7, the spa reactively defended Merager at first.
“Like many other metropolitan areas, Los Angeles contains a transgender population, some of whom enjoy visiting a spa,” the spa wrote in a statement. “Wi Spa strives to meet the needs and safety of all of its customers, and does not tolerate harassment or lewd conduct by any customer, regardless of their sex, gender, or other characteristic.”
It was later discovered that Merager has been a registered sex offender since 2006, due to indecent exposure incidents in 2002 and 2003.
Following an investigation, charges were filed.
