Austin Police Department released bodycam footage from last month when officers were forced to kill a man after he attempted to bring a handgun inside a nightclub.
Trei Michael Adriec Hernandez tried to enter Soho Lounge but was denied entry because he was carrying a handgun. A Soho Lounge employee told officers that Hernandez did not want to be searched before entering the bar.
“He can’t get in. He’s got a weapon on him,” the employee can be heard telling officers on the video footage.
When Austin police officers approached Hernandez, he pulled out a gun and allegedly was able to fire off a shot before being subdued by the officers’ gunfire.
In the video, Hernandez can be seen on the ground after being shot and officers can be heard shouting at him to “drop the gun.”
He eventually dropped his head to the ground as well as the pistol.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, the department only released bodycam footage from two officers who were present but did not fire their weapons, stating that their videos provided a “clearer visual” of what happened.
Each of the three officers has since been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
Three other people were injured by the shooting, one of them with serious injuries, but Austin police did not state whether the injuries were caused by Hernandez or them.
