Texas officer shot and killed responding to a home burglary

Midland city officials announced that one of its police officers was killed overnight responding to a burglar alarm at a home Tuesday morning.

According to CBS7, a homeowner who thought his home was being broken into and then shot and killed five-year veteran Nathan Heidelberg.

In an email, four officers responded to the scene and made a loud announcement that they were the police.

The homeowner then fired his gun, thinking the police were burglars, towards the spotlight being held by Heidelberg.

The bullets struck him just above his bullet-proof vest.

Heidelberg died a few hours later from the injuries.

The Texas Rangers will now investigate.
