Two people were arrested Friday night at the police station here after protests turned turbulent on the anniversary of the police shooting of Black teen Michael Brown 10 years ago.
Police said they expected more arrests on Saturday after officers review footage from the night.
Friday night started off as a reunion. Around 40 people gathered in front of the Ferguson police headquarters, drank beer, ate food, and filled the street. Traffic was diverted to make room.
Many there had protested on the same South Florissant street 10 years ago.
Police spokeswoman Pat Washington said they expected the protest to be peaceful. They had two police cars on either side of the street, and protesters did not fight with police early in the evening.
“We wanted to give peaceful protesters the space to do so,” Washington said Saturday morning.
Around midnight, however, at least five protesters tried to knock down part of the fence surrounding the police station, leading to the arrests.
Elijah Gant, who was arrested later, said he was not disappointed by the turn out.
“It only takes one person to touch other people when you believe in something big,” he said.
Washington said the department is still trying to make arrests and review footage to decide the charges.
“There will be others,” she said Saturday.
