Officers were conducting a traffic stop on Stewarts Ferry Pike near McCrory Creek, when they say 19-year-old Michael Hughes got out of the front passenger seat and took off. A foot chase ensued and police say Hughes “ran out of his blue jeans” and was “clutching something in his waistband.”
A short time later, a THP trooper coming out of the Dept. of Safety & Homeland Security training center, says he “heard a rustle of leaves and branches on the other side of his patrol car.”
Hughes was hiding there, wearing a white T-shirt and gym shorts. He also had on a black ankle monitor, ABC 9 reports. Hughes told trooper John Welker he was trying to get to the YMCA, but at the same time, metro police choppers were hovering above the area. The THP trooper took Hughes into custody.
Nashville police officers later found a loaded handgun and small amount of marijuana inside his car.
