Several members of the NYPD were shot and another was stabbed during a confrontation with a suspect on Wednesday- and the bullet came from an officer’s issued sidearm.

The incident took place in Brooklyn fifteen minutes to midnight, when a suspect approached one officer and stabbed him in the neck.

In response to the stabbing, other officers rushed the scene, with one drawing his sidearm.

According to the New York Post, the suspect attempted to grab the weapon, and a round was discharged.

The wayward bullet struck one officer in the and and another in the arm.

Having had quite enough, one NYPD sergeant opened fire on the suspect, who is now in critical condition.

The injured officers were transported to a nearby medical center and are expected to be okay.

“It appears to be a complete cowardly, despicable, unprovoked attack on a defenseless police officer,” NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said at a press conference following the shooting. “I think we are all fed up with, what we’re saying is this violence has to stop.”

Witnesses report around sixteen shots being fired. The incident did not take place near any protests.
