Federal authorities are investigating a possible ISIS-inspired attack that happened in Virginia over the weekend.

Police say a couple was returning home to the Pines apartment complex in Roanoke on Saturday night, when the brutal assault happened.

The suspect was reportedly shouting “Allah Akbar” as he stabbed them.

Roanoke County Police identified the man as 20-year-old Wasil Farooqui, who is now in custody, ABC News reports.

The FBI stated Farooqui may have been trying to behead his victims in an ISIS-inspired attack.

Federal authorities have apparently been aware of Farooqui for some time and said that in the past year, he travelled to Turkey and may have tried to sneak into Syria.

The special agent in charge of FBI’s Richmond field office, said in a statement. “While I cannot discuss details of the investigation at this time, I do want to reassure the community that we are working to determine the nature of the incident.”

The FBI director has sent out a warning that ISIS leaders have been reaching out to “troubled souls worldwide” hoping to recruit potential killers. The terrorist group is trying to motivate people to kill on their behalf even if the potential “soldiers” cannot travel overseas to train.

The condition of the two stabbing victims, in Roanoke, is not known. Police believe they were likely picked at random.
