A woman accused of stabbing a Colorado police officer and stealing his patrol car was captured about 30 miles from where the crime took place on Tuesday afternoon- and the officer is lucky to be alive.
21-year-old Shayanne Maestas assaulted the Rocky Ford Police officer while he was performing a welfare check, stabbing him in the neck and barely missing his artery.
As the officer -who is also the police chief’s son- fell wounded, Maestas jumped into his police cruiser and took off.
While multiple agencies from two different states were involved, the vehicle was located about 25-30 miles south of Rocky Ford, with four flat tires and Maestas sitting in the driver’s seat.
Of the two firearms reported to be in the vehicle at the time of its theft, only the patrol rifle has been recovered.
According to KKTV, the officer involved is expected to recover. In arrest papers, he said he was glad she stole his car and took off, as he was concerned about having to kill her if the attack had continued.
