PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — An Uber driver shot and killed one man and critically wounded another during an attempted robbery, according to reports.

Police are searching for a third suspect who managed to run away after the robbery attempt just after midnight Saturday, NBC Philadelphia reports. The Uber driver was not injured.

According to Fox 29, the driver was getting out his vehicle when three men carrying firearms approached and attempted to rob him. The driver, who is licensed to carry a firearm, pulled out his own weapon and shot two of the men, CBS Philadelphia reports. It’s unclear if the third suspect who was able to escape was wounded.

The two suspects who were shot both are in their 20s, reports say. Both were taken to the hospital, with one dying at about 5 a.m. Saturday.

An inspector with Philadelphia police tells CBS Philadelphia that surveillance video of the incident confirms the driver’s description of what happened.

“All he kept saying is, ‘I had to, I had to. I didn’t want to, but I had to,’” Rachael Onimus tells CBS Philadelphia. “You could tell he was really upset about it, but I’m glad he was able to protect his family and protect himself.”

  1. He’s gonna catch hell from the prosecuting attorney for going after them… the gun isnt there to get revenge … the gun is there to protect yourself….. once the attackers start to flee and you keep shooting at them, that’s a no-no….
