Officers and staff at the Columbus Police Department headquarters were witness to an emotional tribute to a slain officer on Sunday.

Employees in the building were drawn to the windows by the sound of “Taps” being played outside by an unknown man.  It was a tribute to slain Columbus PD Officer Steven M. Smith, who died from a gunshot wound he suffered as the SWAT team he was on was serving a felony arson warrant.

The touching tribute to Officer Smith brought some at the headquarters to tears, according to Fox 59.

The department posted the video to their Facebook page, with a quote from CPD Homicide Det. Howe calling the gesture “pretty incredible.”

Following the rendition, the man saluted the flag, which was flying at half-mast in front of the building, and walked off, before officers could personally thank him.
