Aug. 22–A 30-year-old man was shot and killed by St. Louis police officers Tuesday morning after he sliced an officer’s arm with a knife, police said.
Officers responded to a Ridge Avenue duplex in the 5200 block around 8 a.m. after a resident reported being cut by his neighbor, according to acting Chief Lawrence O’Toole.
When officers went to take the suspect into custody, he brought out a knife. O’Toole said he then slashed one of the officers on his arm.
At that point, O’Toole said, that officer and his partner opened fire on him. The suspect died from the gunshot wounds.
The injured officer was taken to the hospital and treated. His injuries were reported as minor to moderate.
Both officers were placed on administrative leave — one has seven years of experience and the other has nine years of experience.
O’Toole said police have responded to the address several times this year for domestic issues.
“We know that we received prior calls to that location for disturbances,” O’Toole said. “Whether or not it involved the same individuals, that they lived there at that time, is unknown. That will come out in the investigation.”
