A simple check-in with a man sitting in a car turned into a deadly shootout in Polk County, Florida, after a man who identifies as a Moorish sovereign citizen pulled out and fired his gun at two sheriff’s deputies.
According to Bay 9 News, the shooting happened sometime early Saturday morning. A deputy saw a parked car at a Lakeland park and walked over to evaluate the situation. That’s when he found the accused gunman, who has not been identified by name, inside. The suspect refused to listen to the deputy’s order, so the deputy called for backup.
Two deputies arrived on the scene and together, the three of them attempted to remove the man from the car. That’s when he drew his weapon and began firing at the deputies. Two of the deputies were struck by bullets. The suspect was killed.
“He asked for a gunfight. We gave him a gunfight. And he’ll never be in another gunfight again. Because he’s dead, like he asked for,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
Deputy Chad Anderson had to have emergency surgery after one bullet passed through his arm and into his chest. Deputy Craig Smith is in the ICU being treated for four gunshot wounds.
