A 28-year-old man struck a Daytona Beach Shores police officer with his truck’s passenger-side mirror as he fled a traffic stop Wednesday morning, according to a report from WOFL.
An unidentified officer stopped William Patterson after noticing he was not wearing a seat belt, the report said. After discovering Patterson’s license was suspended, the officer told him to exit his truck.
That’s when Patterson drove off, WOFL said.
The officer used his Taser on Patterson, who struck the back of the patrol car during the escape, WOFL said.
“I got one that’s running,” the officer is heard saying on video of the incident. “He tried to run me over.”
Patterson eventually surrendered after he entered the school zone at Longstreet Elementary School, WOFL said.
He faces several charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and felony possession of marijuana, the report said.
