Two police officers were killed in a shootout Saturday morning in Mississippi, according to authorities.

Patrolman James White and Corporal Zack Moak were fatally wounded during an exchange of gunfire around 5 a.m. They were responding to a report of shots fired at a residence in Brookhaven, located about an hour south of Jackson.

“They’re heroes and my heart goes out to all their families,” Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins said during an emotional press briefing late Saturday morning.

“You never know when it is going to be your last day.”

One suspect, 25-year-old Marquis Flowers was injured in the early morning confrontation and taken into custody, according to police. Flowers, a Lincoln County resident, was being treated at a hospital in Jackson and his condition is unknown.

Warren Strain, with the Department of Public Safety, said the investigation is still in its earliest stages and that there is not yet a lot of information about the events that prompted the shootout.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant mourned the law enforcement officers with a tweet late Saturday morning.

“Let us all pray just now for the family and loved ones of these fallen heroes,” he wrote. “May the Good lord hold them in his everlasting arms.”

Moak, 31, joined the Brookhaven Police Department in 2015 and 35-year-old White was recently rehired after working for a while in Monticello.

“He just came back home,” Collins said.

The deadly shooting comes less than two years after Lincoln County Deputy William Durr, formerly a Brookhaven police officer, was killed in a shooting that also left seven others dead.

“This is what we do, we give our life in service to the community,” Collins added. “They did their jobs and I’m proud of them.”

Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is leading the investigation.
