Massachusetts State Police are looking for the person who fired a gunshot at a trooper’s cruiser early this morning.

According to CBS Boston, while patrolling an area near the Foxboro-Mansfield line, the state trooper heard a loud noise from behind, then saw a “large amount of white smoke” in the same area, “just several feet from the cruiser.”

The trooper was not hurt, his cruiser not damaged. After conducting a search of the area off the highway, police found a rifle and other items believed to have been dropped by the suspect. It’s believed the weapon was a Muzzleloader, or black powder gun, which is often sold for hunting.

The trooper apparently got a good look at the suspect, when he reversed direction and noticed a “white male wearing light colored clothing in the wood line.” He says at that point, the person he spotted stood up and ran into the woods.

State and local police searched that area with dogs, a helicopter and an infrared camera, but did not find the shooter, according to WBZ.

Police say evidence suggests the shooting may have been intentional.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Mansfield Police Department at 508-261-7301.
