Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone lashed out at the county council for what he calls ‘underhanded tactics’ after the council denied his request for more money so he could give his deputies a pay raise.
The scathing e-mail was obtained by WBTW.
Sheriff Boone made the monetary request in November, which was denied by the county council because it said it didn’t have the funds.
In the December e-mail, Sheriff Boone called the council’s tactics ‘underhanded’ and lamented on its ‘wasteful spending.’
He continued by saying he believes the council ‘overlooks’ the Sheriff’s Office and has been ‘negligent in giving raises to county employees for over a decade.’
The Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee told News13 that the county can not raise taxes to fund a pay raise if the county’s population does not increase.
Any money for a pay raises would have to come from a general fund.
A council member did say there was a pay raise for deputies within the last six years but did not say when that occurred.
