Sacramento Mayor and former NBA star Kevin Johnson was assaulted by a protester during a dinner event yesterday, in celebration of the city’s Farm-to-Fork Week.

According to witnesses at the event, which took place at Sacramento High School – Johnson’s alma mater—the protester ran at the mayor and threw a pie in his face.

After throwing the pie, 32-year-old Sean Thompson reportedly said something to the mayor which prompted him to hit Thompson “multiple times” in the face.

Some witnesses said Johnson also tackled him to the ground, but the police could not confirm that.

Thompson, a one-time activist with Occupy Sacramento, was charged with felony assault of a public official.  A booking photo, obtained by East Bay Express, shows Thompson with a cut above his eye, dried blood, bruising and stitches.

The mayor continued with his speech at the event and later joked about what happened while speaking at the podium. UFC star Urijah Faber, who was also in attendance, told local media that the protester was all “bloodied up” after the incident.

There were reportedly about 200 people in attendance at the “Edible Garden” event—including a few dozen high school students.

Johnson is no stranger to scandal. At the height of his NBA career with the Phoenix Suns in 1996, he was accused of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old girl.  The woman, who claimed she was fondled by Johnson in the shower as a teenager, came forward about the allegations last year.
