Border Patrol agents have discovered a disturbing trend among the illegal immigrants recently arrested near the U.S./Mexico border.
There’s been a surge in the number of convicted sex offenders being stopped in the Tucson Sector.
So far this fiscal year, federal officials say, agents have arrested 46 sex offenders. This month alone, 10 have been arrested. Compare that to a total of 69 sex offenders that were arrested in FY 2015. That’s a “significant spike” in a very short period of time, Sector officials said.
These are people who’ve committed violent sex crimes in the past and are now trying to enter the country illegally. One of them is a 33-year-old Mexican citizen – who was arrested March 13 near Three Points– after he was convicted of felony child molestation in Georgia and removed from the U.S. in 2014.
According to KOLD-TV, out of the last 10 sex offenders arrested by agents in the Tucson Sector, eight of them are from Mexico. Two others are from El Salvador and Honduras.
The government wants to ensure that every person arrested by the Border Patrol undergoes “extensive background checks” so that violent criminals don’t fall through the cracks.
A spokesperson for the Tucson Sector said: “Every person they encounter potentially has a criminal history so we really don’t know what we’re working with until we bring that person in and run those records checks. Agents are working every day to make our community safer…by getting those people off the streets.”
