Tense moments for a family in Eagle Mountain, Utah Sunday night, after 23-year-old Daniel Edwards took his niece hostage.
Edwards’ wife called police as her husband was holding their niece at knifepoint. The 17-year- old girl was Daniel’s niece by marriage.
When police arrived at the home, they found Edwards holding the girl in one hand and a butcher knife in the other.
“A couple of times he had made threats of doing a countdown but wouldn’t tell deputies what would happen at the end of the countdown,” Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon said.
When Edwards told police “he would kill the hostage in 60 seconds,” deputies moved into the home about 9:30 pm, according to KSL.com.
The threat to the girl’s life became immediate when Edwards refused to follow deputies’ orders to drop the knife. That’s when one of the officers fired his weapon once–killing Edwards.
The deputy that fired the fatal shot is a trained SWAT officer but wasn’t there as a member of the SWAT team, police said.
Investigators did not say what may have led Edwards to hold the girl hostage and threaten to kill her.
