On Monday, Memphis police officers shot an armed man who fired shots while attempting to enter a Jewish school.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, allegedly approached Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South around 12:20 p.m. and fired several shots before fleeing in a maroon truck.
“Thankfully, that school had a great safety procedure and process in place and avoided anyone being harmed or injured at that scene,” Assistant Police Chief Don Crowe said.
Shortly after fleeing, officers were able to track down his vehicle.
After the suspect exited the vehicle with a firearm in hand, officers opened fire.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition.
When asked by reporters if they believed the incident was motivated by hate since the alleged target was a Jewish school, Crowe stated it was too early in the investigation to speculate.
“It’s way too early for that. Again, we’re very early in this investigation,” Crowe said.
Four months ago, a shooter targeted a Christian school in Nashville and killed six people, including three children.
