Police release video of senior Florida prosecutor shoplifting cosmetics

Aventura police on Tuesday released surveillance footage that they say shows a senior Broward prosecutor putting cosmetics in her purse and walking out of a Publix without paying for them.

Assistant State Attorney Stacey Honowitz was suspended from her $108,000-a-year job on Monday pending an investigation. She has been charged with misdemeanor theft.

The security footage shows Honowitz shopping with her teenage daughter Saturday afternoon at a Publix on 18995 Biscayne Blvd. She is seen browsing in the cosmetics aisle and placing items in her purse.

She can later be seen paying a cashier for more than $120 in groceries.

But Honowitz did not leave the store immediately — a few minutes later she was in line to buy a lottery ticket, and she appears to reach into her purse to get money to pay the second cashier.

Then the surveillance footage shows Honowitz and her daughter leaving the store, only to be confronted by a security guard and a Publix employee.

Honowitz is a veteran prosecutor who has served the State Attorney’s Office for 29 years and 11 months, according to state records. She repeatedly won plaudits for her work and for working with medical and legal educators to teach students about prosecuting sex crimes.

She has frequently been featured as a legal analyst on cable news programs.

Her lawyer, Jayne Weintraub, said after her suspension on Monday that Honowitz made an honest mistake, forgetting to pay for the mascara and lipstick she meant to purchase.

There is no indication that Honowitz sees the cosmetics in her handbag before she pays for her groceries, or later for her lottery ticket.

Efforts to reach Weintraub by email and phone Tuesday evening were unsuccessful.
