ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia police officer who was injured during a shootout with two suspects has been released from a hospital after being treated for a shoulder injury, authorities said Saturday.
Officer Marco Vizcarrando, a 19-year veteran of the DeKalb County Police Department, was shot in the upper left shoulder after chasing two men who had crashed a vehicle at a gas station in Tucker, Georgia, on Friday.
DeKalb County Police Capt. Stephen Fore said Saturday that 47-year-old Vizcarrando was treated and released from Grady Hospital late Friday. Fore said the two suspects face charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and felony obstruction.
County safety director Cedric Alexander said Vizcarrando tried to pull over the suspects’ vehicle as part of a gun-running investigation. When the officer turned on the patrol car’s blue light, the suspects fled in their vehicle with the officer in pursuit, Alexander said.
The suspects’ vehicle the crashed into a sign in front of the gas station, and the two suspects jumped out of the vehicle and ran. The officer chased them before gunshots were fired.
Alexander said police believe one of the suspects fired an automatic weapon at the officer.
One suspect was caught at the scene with a firearm. The other fled into a wooded area around the gas station before being captured with the help of a K-9 unit.
Fore said neither suspect sustained a significant injury. An additional firearm has been recovered from the suspects’ vehicle.
