Prince George’s County police are investigating what led to a fatal crash, killing an officer and injuring a female passenger.

Residents from Lanham, Md were woken by noise discovering a police cruiser had crashed into their backyard.

Brennan Rabain, 26, was killed in the line of duty after he lost control of his vehicle during a traffic stop around three o’clock in the morning.

Police say he was off duty until he chose to take police action. He turned on lights and sirens to make a traffic stop just before losing control. The car left the scene without stopping.

Police speculate that the collision may have been caused by black ice. They are hoping the dashcam will provide answers as to what caused the accident.

Saturday afternoon during a press conference Chief Mark Magaw told the media that, “He was living his dream working as a police officer…There’s nothing else he wanted to do with his life.”

Rabin had been with the department for less than two years and leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.
