TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in northwest Ohio say a police dog chasing two suspected car thieves was fatally shot, and one suspect was found dead after a standoff.

Toledo police followed the suspects from a car into a vacant home Wednesday evening. Police Chief George Kral says the car’s driver shot the dog and was hit by return fire from an officer who then left the home.

The Blade newspaper reports a standoff ensued and the passenger from the car was eventually arrested. The second suspect died inside the home, but it wasn’t clear whether the police gunfire was the cause.

Authorities didn’t immediately identify the suspects.

Police lined up with their hands over their hearts in tribute as workers wheeled away the body of the dog, a German Shepherd named Falco.
