Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams promised a massive crowd changes are coming to her department, but the community has to make changes first.
According to KNXV, Chief Williams was met with “boos” from the crowd as hundreds of people packed the city-organized meeting.
The assembly was put together after protestors took to the streets over the May “use of force” incident where officers arrested a family for shoplifting.
Chief Williams is personally overseeing the investigation into the officers’ actions.
Bystanders recorded the incident and many of the videos went viral.
Police later released surveillance video showing a four-year-old girl walking out of a Dollar Store carrying a Barbie doll she did not pay for, and the girl’s father, Dravon Ames, stealing underwear from a different store. Ames is also facing aggravated assault charges from a pending case from last year.
Many in the crowd shouted, “fire the officers.”
The child’s mother addressed city leaders saying, “We matter.”
The family is now suing the city for $10 million for civil rights violations.
